Well, if you have mgetty send an init-string to the modem that will hose
it, then it will be hosed. Without looking at the mgetty log file and
your modem manual, this can't be further diagnosed... :-)
Since there was no description in *which way* pppd fails when mgetty is
running, and "lock file problem" is by far (99.5%) the most common cause,
especially since some major distributions ship with broken PPP startup
scripts, this was the logical assumption for us to make - this is why it
is so important to be able to look at mgetty/pppd log files...
But thanks for clarifying this, I will try to remember when the next
mgetty/ppp question comes in.
