mgetty and pppd (was Re: Playing nice...)

Several people have made the assumption that there is a *locking*
problem
between my mgetty and pppd.  So apparently this is a commonly-discussed
issue. But the reality is that locking works fine--I was quite impressed
with
how well mgetty and pppd co-existed.  The problem turned out to be
something
as yet unidentified that mgettty does to my modem (a  Zoom 56K) which
renders
it unable to transfer data packets.

For now, the quick fix is to simply have pppd reset the modem to factory

defaults prior to doing its thing (I use AT&F...), and let mgetty reset
the
modem when pppd releases the serial line.  A little more research on my
part
should turn up the real answer.

I won't waste any more bandwidth on the documentation thing, I just
wanted to
throw my USD0.02 in.  It looks like the mail archive covers many of the
issues with mgetty not addressed in the docs/FAQ.
