Sometimes data connection works, and sometimes it doesn't

... it occasionally "identifies" the incoming call as "FAX" (and
subsequently fails, understandably, sending an +FHNG: error code).  I
think the only remedy will be to switch off fax detection (mgetty -D), 
if reliability for PPP connections is really important for you.
