Fax connect speeds

I've been using two different faxes for testing: a Canon 9000 Super G3 =
and an old Sharp 510 (either
a 9600 or 14400 machine)

I keep getting 2400 bps connects from both.

Here's the mail I get from mgetty:
----
A fax was successfully received:

regards, your modem subsystem.

Does that mean that mgetty thinks that the sending fax is only capable of=
 2400 baud? If so, then
this is something else broken with my damned Atlas modem. ( I had to =
comment out the beep command,
else the modem hung until a power cycle.)

I know that the Sharp is capable of at least 9600. When I tried the =
Canon, a 33,600 machine, it
also sent at 2400.
