Make sure you're using "bash" as your script shell.  As far as I know,
things like those:

>      {
>      read -r INPUT <&$VOICE_INPUT;

are pretty much bash-specific (at least it doesn't work with ksh here).

I'm not sure whether that's the problem, but it could be.
