Ah, there is an other interesting service thing: ARMIN.

the result for the user is this: If you have new Email there is a small
light glimming, if not, it is off.

technique: a small box is connected to your telephone-line. If you have
mail, your provider calls a certain number, which is recognized by the
small box, but the call will be ignored (do it doesn't cost any money).
After that the light is turned on...

PS: I can imagine, that you can use this also to make mgetty to call your
provider and get the mail...
