Is this normal?

This is much faster, but unfortunately, the resulting output isn't quite
right.  The output goes (just barely) off the end of the page, and for
normal resolution, the stretched text seems to be padded out with blank
scan lines which makes the text look kind of funny.

The method I mentioned previously produces very nice text, it just takes a
long time getting there :)
