In summary:

   - one WINS server on the network (possibly the PPP server, e.g. nmbd)
   - Use the same class of address for Ethernet than for PPP
   - Use the proxyarp option to pppd so that no specific routing
     must be installed on the network
   - Configure in hard the WINS server in the MS-* machine (/etc/ppp/option
     msdns/mswins sometimes works, sometimes doesn't).
