PPP server set up: makin pppd the user's shell

Um? That's what you asked for - if you use pppd as login shell, you'll get
"ppp garbage" after login.  If you don't speak PPP, don't use pppd as
login shell.

Or is there something that I don't understand?

Have you looked at pppd's log file?
