unmotivated hang-ups with vgetty

hi,

I use vgetty from the mgetty-1.1.18 package with a USR Sportster
Message Plus modem. From time to time the modem just stops 
recording the incoming call and hangs up the line, while the
caller is still speaking.

What did happen here, that made my modem hang up the line?

I tried "rec_silence_len 200" and "rec_silence_threshold 30" in
voice.conf, cause I think it must have something to do with silence 
detection. 
"rec_silence_threshold 50" doesn't help either.
