Interesting problem. Never heard that one before. All problems I have
observed with dvips+ps so far have resulted in "bad images", but not in
"neverending processes".
OTOH, if the 486-40 doesn't have enough RAM, that might be a reason.
Ghostscript can be very RAM hungry, and if you start swapping heavily, it
might take very long. 80 minutes sound too long, nevertheless.
