Make sure to do an "init q" after modifying the inittab file each time
- otherwise your changes will not take effect until the next reboot.

Hi,
"ps" should show mgetty. If it doesn't, check the /etc/inittab entry,
and make sure that the run level you specified for mgetty (the ":23:"
field) is valid - that means, if your system runs in level 5, it won't
execute any line starting with "xxx:23:respawn:...".
man init.
