Yes, I have experienced this, and I am also running one of those
"cheap modems" -- a Zyxel Omin288S!

I am using distinctive ring to give incoming voice, fax, and data each
their own number, which should eliminate the need to autodetect. It
works somewhat, but it is still flakey. It was unusable for voice
under 1.1.2, although mgetty worked flawlessly for fax and data. Now
with 1.1.9 it works much better for voice, but I still get hang-ups
sometimes when trying to reveice fax.

Prior to upgrading the modem firmware, even mgetty was not reliable.
I am still one revision behind on the modem firmware. I have ftp-ed
the load, but I have not flashed it itno the modem roms yet. I've
just been too busy. Maybe when I do, it will solve everything. :-)

I am running the modem connected to /dev/ttyS1, the standard COM2: PC
port, under Linux kernel 2.0.29 on a P200 with 128 MB ram and 9 GB
disk, so I shouldn't be short on resources...
