Most telco switches (and PBX equipment) ignore it. The only things I've
seen that use the ABCD 'hooks' are automated telephone-operated equipment;
at least one automatic switch box uses them (you dial in with your modem,
and then on connect, you get another dialtone; send the 'A'..'D' based on
which of four servers you wish to connect to.)
I haven't seen any recent application of them...
(The solution to the problem of running out of phone numbers in the US?)
