I have one of the Elite 2864's hooked up to an HP 712 running HP-UX
and have had no problems. I use the data features daily, the fax
features about twice a month, and do not use the voice.

I pulled it out of the box, plugged it in and haven't had to worry
about it one bit. A simple replacement for the 1496.

My regular data calls are only at 14.4K, but I have successfully
connected at 28.8K to Compuserve using a long distance call and
via the 800 number. I consistently got 28.8 in one direction and
  24K or 21.6K the other.
