Request for opinions on 28.8 voice-capable modems

I know the champion of vgetty is the ZyXel U1496, in any of its incarnations.
However, I'd like to move up to a 28.8kbps model. Are there any 28.8 models
with voice capability and stability that match the 1496?
The Elite 2864, ZyXel's latest offering, has been getting severely panned on
the Net, so I'm feeling a bit of trepidation about putting the investment
into it.
What are people's experiences, if any, with the 2864? Any other 28.8 modems?
Also, a question about chipsets: it seems like Zyxel makes their own, and
Rockwell chips are used by almost everyone else. Are there any others? Have
Rockwell chipsets improved any in bulletproofedness in the last couple years?
Have any global standards been set or proposed for voice function commands?
Thanks,
Matt M.
