    No, I haven't tried incorporating it in viewfax.  My prejudice is based on
    looking at xdvi and sun's pageview with anit-aliasing enabled.  I seem to
    recall that Sam Leffler's faxview anti-aliases too, at least it uses 8-bit
    visuals.

Yes, faxview was an experiment; it displays a full page at a time as an
8-bit greyscale properly filtered image.  The viewer is noticeably
slower than viewfax despite a bit of tuning and more importantly the
images were frequently hard to read.  I tried different filters and
experimented with various contrast curves for display but finally
decided the right way to go was to do it dumb but fast (and then
Frank's viewer came out and I didn't even have to do it myself!).
