   It still does not do anti-aliasing.  Maybe it is just my display or eyes or
   something, but anti-aliased faxes don't look better, in fact they look worse
   to me.

Have you tried anti-aliasing?  Do you still have the code?  I'd like
to give it a try, because in my experience, anti-aliasing works pretty well.
