If you use the ``login'' option of pppd, then the system will use
encrypted passwords from /etc/passwd to authentify PPP users. You thus
presumably do not need a chap-secrets or pap-secrets file.

That's maybe what Mick Dennis' document is talking about.

I personally use *CHAP* authentification (+chap -pap), passwords
in /etc/ppp/chap-secrets, and I do not use the login option.
