Sure - that's mgetty's job.  If you tell mgetty to use fax/data mode, mgetty
will tell the modem "hey, please answer this call, decide whether it's fax
or data, and then tell me what you found out".  If the modem is not
capable to do so, things will fail.

Hmmm.  Should work with "-D" (data-only yes).
