Help interpreting fax error message

I am trying to install mgetty+sendfax on a suse 6 linux machine with a
USR "Sporster faxmodem with x2".  When I try to send a fax the following
error terminates the job 
(excerpt from sendfax.log):

I would be grateful for any help interpreting this or for a pointer to
documentation: I have read everything I have been able to find with no
