Vgetty script problems

I need to write a script for a custom voice application, but I can't get
vgetty to interact properly with call_program scripts, either the Perl
or shell variety.

It works flawlessly using the default behavior with no script.

Using the supplied demo.sh script (or any other), it will answer, play
the greeting, and record, but it won't terminate the recording.  I have
to eventually the vgetty process to make it stop recording off-hook
noises.

I am running Slackware 4.0, mgetty 1.1.21 and an internal USR 33.6 V.34
