Hmmmm, could hint at a setup problem - could you get a mgetty log file
of the time the "minicom" experiment was made, plus minus 5 minutes?

No, but this doesn't sound like an INMARSAT problem, more like a generic
modem/Linux setup issue (mixing /dev/ttySx and /dev/modem, or a problem
with mgetty's init chat, or something like this).
