Basically, this looks ok.

Look into the mgetty log file, *why* it is failing. It could fail because
of driver problems (make sure that you get the LATEST Cyclades driver, AND
that you compile it with gcc-2.7.2.3, do NOT use egcs or gcc 2.8.x), or
just because it sends some command that the modem doesn't like.
