What's RPM anyway?

It's good on ONE platform (Linux).  

Tar files - which is what "make bindist" does - can be made and used 
for ANY platform mgetty runs on.

While I agree that RPM in general is a good idea (because of dependencies
etc.), it's not something that is *so* important that we should throw away
working things in exchange to something of more limited functionality.
