Hmmm. I'm not sure what the "vt100" is doing there, but it doesn't
belong there. If you want to set the TERM type, set "term vt100" in
mgetty.config.
The second thing is, don't use gettydefs together with mgetty on Linux.
It doesn't work (there are some subtle bugs left that nobody has nailed
down yet), and most likely, you don't need it, unless you have something
really weird, using 7 bits and parity.

For *those* settings, you definitely don't need gettydefs, as that's
exactly what mgetty will do anyway. Make sure you have set
"ignore-carrier yes" in mgetty.config (for CLOCAL).

Don't use spd_vhi. Besides that, looks ok.

Could be a parity error. Make sure your terminal uses 8 data bits, no
parity.
(and don't send e-mail as "root").
