Linux 2.0 / i386 must not be compiled with egcs.  There are some 
constructs where egcs will break the resulting kernel.  This is a
well-known fact, and Linux 2.1 is egcs-safe.

Mgetty itself shouldn't care.

Egcs is known to miscompile i386 stuff occasionally.
