... but the response (288) is not in the (static, compiled-in) list of
"known" modems. So it's unknown :)

... and mgetty just tries the old way "can you do 2.0? no. can you do
class 2? yes. Fine".

If you want your modem to be auto-detected in 1.1.17, please send
me the exact output (including spacing and OK/ERROR codes) of the
ATI, ATI1, ..., ATI9 commands of your modem, and a description how
it is called.
Otherwise, as long as it works, just don't care.
