OK, that explains it.  Those could really be problems because of scanning
(it's hard to make sure "zero" and "Oh" are properly distinguished, unless 
you have the typical computer-zeros with a slash in them).

USR Couriers are very good, USR Sportsters usually work well enough for data,
but are quite crappy for fax.

That's a ppp issue, actually.  As mgetty doesn't know the user name yet
(PPP will do the authentication, using PAP or CHAP), it can only put
/AutoPPP/ (or any other static string) in there.

Actually, pppd's "login" option should put the user name into utmp, but I
don't know why it doesn't work for everybody.

(BTW: This is a very frequent question, which is covered by the mgetty
FAQ...)

You might want to look at pppd 2.3.<something>.  2.0 is OOOOLD, maybe "login"
did not yet include this feature at that time.
