That sounds like a PPP bug.  "@" in the login.config line will only put
"/AutoPPP/" in the utmp/wtmp files, not the real user name ('cause mgetty
doesn't know!):

So actually it should work *better* without the "@" (because you don't get
double wtmp entries).
