Hmm interesting...

I have had a few problems with the utmp as well. This is what `w` does...

[root@vodka /root]# w
 11:52am up 5 days, 1:01, 15 users, load average: 1.10, 1.08, 1.02
USER TTY FROM LOGIN@ IDLE JCPU PCPU WHAT
/AutoPPP ttyE0 31200 9:12am 2:40m 0.00s ? -
/AutoPPP ttyE1 26400 10:47am 1:05m 0.00s ? -
/AutoPPP ttyE2 26400 10:33am 1:19m 0.00s ? -
/AutoPPP ttyE3 28800 7:36am 4:16m 0.00s ? -
/AutoPPP ttyE4 26400 9:12am 2:40m 0.00s ? -
/AutoPPP ttyE5 26400 10:57am 55:17 0.00s ? -

and so on... I get round the problem with

		`cat /var/log/wtmp | grep still logged in`

As these sorts of problems are not usually with mgetty, they are with the
programme mgetty is passing info too, I wasn't going to bring it up. But as
the two versions of mgetty and pppd I use come with redhat 5.1 I e-mailed
the redhat people and mentioned it to them. In fact I suspect that the
problem is with the fact that utmp and wtmp are addressed differently as of
redhat 5.0, and pppd doesn't know about it yet.

I recompiled a new version of pppd with heaps of extra logging options but
even that didn't help me locate the problem.

One thing I do notice though is that two entries are written to utmp...

5aa ttyE6 Mon Jul 6 11:07 still logged in
/AutoPPP ttyE6 31200 Mon Jul 6 11:06 - 11:07 (00:00)
hocking ttyE11 Mon Jul 6 11:03 still logged in
/AutoPPP ttyE11 28800 Mon Jul 6 11:03 - 11:03 (00:00)
daniel ttyE5 Mon Jul 6 10:57 still logged in
/AutoPPP ttyE5 26400 Mon Jul 6 10:57 - 10:57 (00:00)
mandyh ttyE1 Mon Jul 6 10:47 still logged in
/AutoPPP ttyE1 26400 Mon Jul 6 10:47 - 10:47 (00:00)
darh ttyE15 Mon Jul 6 10:47 - 11:31 (00:44)
/AutoPPP ttyE15 33600 Mon Jul 6 10:47 - 10:47 (00:00)
royb ttyE7 Mon Jul 6 10:45 still logged in
/AutoPPP ttyE7 28800 Mon Jul 6 10:45 - 10:45 (00:00)

Who can offer some suggestions as to which programme is getting confused
here? As I suspect it's not mgetty I hope this isn't considred too off topic.

That reminds me; Gert, I assme you knew about the changes to wtmp and utmp
logging? As I thought that pppd does the entries, not mgetty I guess it's
somewhat academic.

Cheers

Alex!
