That's not weird, that's pretty clear.  For a standard login, mgetty and
"login" handle user authentication, for AutoPPP, "pppd" does it.  So if
pppd and login have different bugs, different results will happen...

In the AutoPPP case, pppd will negotiate the login name, mgetty won't!
