You might need "blocking yes" as well.

I don't really feel like it - it's pretty obvious why it's failing (with
"direct yes", mgetty waits for *input* before continueing, which is not
coming, thus at some time the remote end gives up and the modem hangs up
-> NO CARRIER -> which is exactly what you're seeing as "input" then).

On the other hand, I just think that *if* people insist on doing things
that are not meant to be done, they should be creative enough to play with
all the available options (and the source code) and see if they can make
it work...
