pppd freezing

Hi,

Installed mgetty recently, great stuff, but now I've been
having a minor drama where my dial-up users are complaining
about their connection "going to sleep" after a while.?

there's 4 com ports (dial-in) on a slackware box, I'm wondering
if it's something to do with the lock file, as I had to disable
the "lock" setting in pppd to get a connection, modems are 
generic rockwell "2 x weblink" "webexcel" "patrol".

any ideas please?
