utmp problems with pppd-2.2.3...

Hi, I upgraded to pppd-2.2.3 from 2.2.2 recently and now my utmp entries for the
logons seem to be broke.  I didn't change the login.config file or
and options. I'm pretty sure that it's mgetty-1.1.9, but I removed the
sources 
quite some time ago and I can seem to tell what the version is on this  
machine.

any suggestions?
