The observation seems right... since it sounds like it's happening after
a page has been sent. But,...
I've tried this and combinations of quirks: 0x20, 0x4, and 0x8 in
sendmail.conf and still get the same behavior: these two fax/modems
won't communicate. The receiver is said to be: "working fine ... I get
faxes all day".

Sorry, I was not sure what might be pertinent.
The JOB logs have the error:
22.04.99 16:18 -> Error transmitting or polling page(s) failed (Status
12)
but I don't know if that's relevant either. My modem is a USRobotics
Courier V.Everything.
