I am not following: are you saying that the calling modem is not sending
the G3 fax calling tone ?  Or are you saying that vgetty is just
hanging up without going data nor going voice ?

In the latter case I want a log.

There *is* another *unreliable* method, which is the fourier transform
stuff (seeing what energy is there. A human is supposed to have a broader
spectrum than a call-initiating modem --- however, a silent human is
like a silent modem).
