voice -> data transition

Hi,
I have the exact same problem that Brian Dawson has. I've tested it with
two friends' modems, and it didn't work. My modem is a Diamond
SupraExpress 56e Pro, which works like a charm in voice mode.
The problem is exactly this:

The modems I tested with didn't generate _anything_. They just sat there
and waited for my box to go beep, which it didn't.
Now, I remember that exactly this behavior didn't occur when I last
installed vgetty (in '96 or so) on my ZyXEL. What I don't remember is if
this was because vgetty noticed a modem on the other end without any
identification tone, or because the other modems I tried with generated
a data calling tone, so the question is:
a) has vgetty's behavior changed, or
b) has the modems' default behavior changed, and if so, how do I get
them to generate a data calling tone after dialing?
One solution would be to put a number of commas (pauses) after the dial
string, and then another DTMF digit, but I'd prefer not to use that...
it's ugly.
