vgetty fax answering fails after power down

Hello.

I have been successfully running vgetty and the mgetty fax code for some time 
now, thank you very much.

I am currently running v1.1.9 and have noticed recently that if the power to a 
modem is turned off and on again (eg when I want to interrupt voice message 
recording and pick up the phone), subsequent incoming faxes are not recognised 
as such and vgetty tries to record a voice message.

Rebooting my system (Linux 2.0.36) returns all to normal and faxes are 
received as usual.

Presumably there is a better way of handling this.

Could you please tell me whether there are other ways of interrupting voice 
message recording so that I can talk to the caller and, if the modem does get into 
the "no fax recognition" mode, how can I get it back to normal without 
rebooting.
