mgetty with multiple modems

Actually, both modems work on data communications, AutoPPP, but the one that is I wanted to use to receive faxes has stopped receiving faxes reliably, as it did before.  I'll try a different external modem instead and see if that helps.  The symptom is that when a fax comes in, it picks up the line, locks the tty port, then hangs up, keeping the port locked.  The modem that is acting up is the external one, but perhaps the internal one is part of the problem.
