voice over ip with vgetty?

How hard would it be to extend vgetty to bridge/gateway the voice it
recieves on one modem to another vgetty computer over the internet? 
sorta of like voice over ip?  


Hook a analog phone to the handset port on both sides and then be able
to talk over the internet thru the modem interfaces.  I know that this
can be done with sound cards and software but the use of hooking up the
computers to local POTS lines and them acting as a voice over ip bridge
to another local POTS line would be great.   I have seen hardware that
does this.  

Can vgetty/mgetty do this?
