german characters with faxspool ? how ?

you might try to find out what the apsfilter package (magic printer
filter, the version distributed with SuSE 6.0) uses to convert plain text,
als i recently gave it a file with german umlaut characters and it
*just*worked* .... (previous versions produced strange symbols, where the
umlauts should have been)
