I've seen this problem before.  It seems that not all jacks which
connect a PC motherboard to a DB-9 (and I presume DB-25) are wired
identically.  When I changed to my most recent motherboard, ttyS1
(same as you're using) stopped working.  Before, I solved this problem 
by switching to a four-port board.  But for some reason, I tried
connecting the serial port using <<the DB-9 jack that came with the
motherboard>> and it worked.  I didn't buzz out the jacks, so maybe it 
was just magic, but it *did* make a difference.
