making RING audible

A friend is asking (and since he is not on this list) I'm passing 
his question on to here:

He has his modem - a plain modem - circuited in parallel to his
phone. When a call comes in a LED at the modem goes lit.

Now his question: Could either mgetty (or vgetty) be made recognizing
the (voice) RING and cause an audible ring tone on /dev/speaker?
