This was the first RING, everything ok so far.

35 seconds no new RING. Sounds like either your modem doesn't want to be
called again after such a short time, or you have some local PABX or so
that will route it to the answering machine. Or maybe the answer machine
simply reacted more *quickly* and immediately got the call.
Try without the answering machine.

Well, what would you expect? There is no way mgetty or your modem can know
what kind of call is coming in (this is not ISDN, where the caller can
signal the call type, but it's POTS, and everything is just a plain old
telephone call).
