If you are just calling other machines, you do not need mgetty at all.
If you want to set up a machine to be a server, or a BBS, then you
need a good reliable high quality modem, because the thing has to work
consistently unattended. I could maybe make you a deal on a Telebit
World Blazer, but it only does data, and only at 14.4 unless it is
talking to another World Blazer. This used to be the ultimate Unix
workhourse modem back in the days before 28.2, since it could transfer
email, news, and uucp files faster than anything else. It went for
over $1000 new back around 5 years ago. I used to use it for uucp
email, news, and file transfer back when I lived in Kentucky out in
the boonies and any ISP was long distance. I called up my provider
every night after midnite and usually stayed connected for an hour or
two. This was all done automatically. It is the most reliable modem
I have ever used.
