pppd will not die

Hello,

 I have used mgetty(1.0.0)+AutoPPP for a long time. It was very nice and
stable. However, I found one strange problem. I saw about 4 or 5 times
that the carrier is off, but pppd is running. Therefore, mgetty will not
answer the call because pppd lock the line. I check the wtmp, the user
is a_ppp not the real username. So, it might be the user hang up the call
while pppd is authenticating by PAP. But I don't understand why pppd will not
die if the carrier (CD) is off. Since I can not trace who cause the problem
and reproduce that. It make me troublesome to kill pppd manually in
order to recover the system. I wonder if anyone has the similar problem?
