Anyway, the file in question with all the rules is named "BUGS" and put
prominently in the main mgetty source directory.

Hmmm. Now, this puzzlese me. From grepping through my sources, I found
the very same command, in "mg_m_init.c", and as long as you didn't set the
modem to data-only by means of the "data-only true" keyword (or the "-D"
flag, or the "-C data" flag), mgetty really should set AT+FAA=1 on its
own.
This is one of the reasons I keep asking for the log files - thinks like
"what flags did you pass to mgetty" are obvious from the log files, and
impossible to know without.
