Well, between 0.17 and 0.18, nothing has changed in the commands that host
and modem exchange - your problem has to be something else than the mgetty
upgrade. (Provided 0.18 is configured properly - how is MODEM_CMD_SUFFIX
set?)

Well, obviously your modem doesn't like the calling one.

The first is "NO CARRIER", and the second is the fax-talk equivalent to
it. So, again, your modem (falsely?) detects a calling fax, and then fails
to start up the modem-to-modem connection.

There's nothing mgetty can do here.

Well, *that* one sounds more like a serial driver / hardware problem that
like something related to mgetty.
