   Well, I did not experience lockups for quite a while, so I can only guess
   - but I'd say that DTR stays low because "init" deactivates mgetty after
   so many unsuccessful tries, so no process has the port open, so the driver
   pulls DTR low automatically.

This appears to be correct. After crashes (more
exactly: after waiting long enough), there's no longer
any mgetty. 

   Would be interesting, though, to watch the modem / mgetty reinitialization
   tries *while it is happening* - but I think I'm daydreaming...

Feel free to visit me during cebit time ;^) Although I
hope to get rid of the problem until then. I wouldn't
like to see my BBS hanging after one day when I'm off
for Uniforum :|
